BJP Gets Historic Mandate in Gujarat; Congress Wins Himachal

The BJP is on its way to seal an emphatic win in Gujarat, breaking the Congress’s 1985 record for the biggest victory.
Counting of votes to determine who will rule two states – Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh – for the next five years began at 8 am today, December 8. At present, BJP appears poised to win emphatically in Gujarat. Congress is ahead in Himachal where independent candidates could prove kingmaker.
Results of the bypolls to five assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat, Mainpuri, will also emerge after counting today. In both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, the entry of the Aam Aadmi Party has made the contest interesting as the party appears keen to wrest the main opposition’s position from Congress. In Gujarat, Bharatiya Janata Party has led a busy campaign and is looking for its seventh win in the state.
