New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah staunchly defended the contentious Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill in a fervent political address, rebuking the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for alleged corruption and misgovernance during its tenure in Delhi. In a charged session marked by heated exchanges between the ruling party and the Opposition, the bill was eventually passed through a voice vote. The debate witnessed Amit Shah invoking the wisdom of national icons, quoting figures such as Nehru, Patel, Ambedkar, and Rajendra Prasad. “This ordinance is rooted in the Supreme Court’s decree, affirming Parliament’s authority to legislate on matters concerning the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The Constitution empowers the Centre to enact laws for Delhi,” Shah asserted.

He lambasted the Opposition for what he labeled as political opportunism. “I pose a simple question to the entire Opposition: You once paralyzed Parliament, demanding the Prime Minister’s statement as a precondition for your presence. Yet, today, what transpired? You profess concern for democracy, yet you abstain from participating when critical bills like those impacting farmers are tabled. Your concern appears to be more about alliances than about the country, democracy, or its citizens. India is indeed watching, scrutinizing the duality of your character,” Shah remarked. Making reference to the newly-formed INDIA, Shah quipped, “You may seek to broaden your coalition by adding a couple more parties, but make no mistake—India’s next Prime Minister will continue to be Narendra Modiji.”

Shah contended that no issues or conflicts with the Centre arose when either the BJP or Congress held power in Delhi, attributing the present confrontations to the AAP administration’s alleged bid to conceal its corruption. “In 2015, a party assumed office in Delhi with a singular agenda of combat, not service. The issue at hand is not merely about control over transfers and appointments, but about gaining authority over the vigilance department—a move that, according to Shah, is aimed at obscuring acts of corruption, akin to the construction of extravagant personal residences.”

Meanwhile, in a dramatic turn of events, AAP Jallandhar MP Sushil Kumar Rinku faced suspension from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the session, following his unruly behavior. Rinku’s defiance reached its zenith as he tore the bill and flung it before the Chair during the voting process, prompting the Opposition to stage a walkout. The Speaker promptly reprimanded Rinku and the government swiftly moved a motion to suspend him, leading to an intensified atmosphere in the already charged legislative assembly.
