Karnataka govt formation live, May 16: D K Shivakumar arrives at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence; Prior to this, Kharge held a closed-door meeting with Rahul Gandh

Karnataka government formation : Amid the race for the Karnataka chief minister’s post, KPCC president D K Shivakumar arrived at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Monday evening. Prior to this, Kharge had held a closed-door meeting with Rahul Gandhi for almost an hour and a half. Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala, who is in charge of the party’s affairs in Karnataka, and AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal were also present at that meeting.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Congress Chief DK Shivakumar has arrived in New Delhi, where he is slated to meet the party high command to discuss government formation in the Southern state. In the running for the all-important Chief Ministerial post are Shivakumar and veteran leader Siddaramaiah.

Days after its triumph in the Karnataka Assembly Election, the Congress is likely to announce the next Chief Minister of the Southern state amid much political lobbying. Speaking to news agency ANI, Shivakumar said that he would not resort to “backstabbing” or “blackmail” regardless of what the Congress’ top leadership decides on the matter. While Siddaramaiah has emerged as the frontrunner, with majority of the newly elected MLAs learnt to have named him as their choice, Shivakumar played hardball. His brother D K Suresh met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in the capital on his behalf yesterday.
